イギリス人女性の側わん症手術体験記

　このページでは、イギリス人女性のデボラさんが、38歳のときに受けた側わん症手術の体験記を、本人の承諾を得た上で、私が日本語に訳したものを掲載しています。　体験記には、側わん症患者に共通する話もたくさん出てきます。　

　デボラさんは歯科医師として働き、3児の母でもあり、はば広い趣味を持っています。　

　実はこの体験記を訳す上では、迷いもありました。　デボラさんは年齢の割には骨がとても柔軟だったため、手術も後方だけですみ、椎間板も肋骨も抜く必要がなく、その結果手術時間もわずか４時間と異常に短くてすみ、術後の回復も医師が驚くほど早かったそうです。　そもそも、38歳で後方手術ができる人は例外的です。　例外的な体験談を訳し、他の人たちの参考になるのか…少し疑問でした。

　それでも、成人の手術体験記は日本語ではまだありませんし、英語でも少ないです（2002年現在）。　さらに彼女の体験記は冷静に、また時系列的に秩序立って書かれており、彼女が医療関係の仕事をしているため、医療に関することも詳しく書かれています。　それで、翻訳を決断しました。

　This page introduces a scoliosis story by a British lady who had fusion surgery at the age of 38. Deborah is a dentist, is a mother of three girls, and enjoys a variety of hobbies. Her story is very well organized and as she herself is engaged in a medical profession, the story is more detailed in medical descriptions. The story contains many aspects of life common to scoliosis patients, and although she may be quite fortunate in having a very flexible spine resulting in shorter surgery time and faster recovery, I believe adult patients considering surgery can get some valuable insight from her story.

　「私のHPが日本語に翻訳されることを、とてもうれしく思っています。

　翻訳したいという話を初めて聞いたときは、本当にうれしく思いました。

　私自身、困難な状況を乗り越え、また自分の置かれた状況に適応しようとしている他の人々の体験談を読んで、大きな刺激を受けました。

　"I am so pleased that my website is being translated into Japanese. I was delighted when Que Sera said she wanted to do it.

　I have been inspired by other stories written by other people of triumph over adversity and coping with the condition that they have.

　I hope that the website will touch a few peoples hearts.
